Preparing for two major rallies at the same time (this years Butt Lite and next year’s IBR) has some advantages, but requires some clearheadedness so as to keep timelines and priorities straight. I’ve begun making purchases and considering additional purchases to prep the bike – things that I’d never thought I’d want or need, but which I am now convincing myself are vital.

After last weekend’s Great Lakes Gold ride alongside two IBR veterans, getting the chance to pick their brains for hours on end, I’ve pulled the trigger (or considered it) on the following so far:

• Newer/bigger/better GPS main unit, the Garmin Zumo 595 (refurbished). This device has TPMS (tire pressure monitoring sensor) functionality to keep me aware of tire pressure at all times without having to manually check it. TPMS is also required by the IBA for bikes entered in the IBR that are running car tires (darkside) like I am.
• Garmin TPMS sensors to screw onto the tire valves and connect via Bluetooth to the new GPS. Purchased used from a fellow rider online.
• Valentine1 radar detector to replace my Escort 9500ix. The V1 has more features that I want, including an extra-cost Bluetooth dongle that will allow radar audio alerts to come to my helmet speakers via my phone.
• New 3.5 gal spun aluminum auxiliary fuel tank, from Sandstorm (temporary for Butt Lite).
• New 3.6’ish gal custom aluminum welded aux fuel tank from Boyd’s Welding in Ocala FL. Assuming this turns out well, it will become my aux fuel source for the IBR next year.
• Toll transponders from North Carolina and Kansas, to cover most states with toll roads between the two of them.
• Considering a real cruise control system, possibly from MC Cruise in Australia, to replace my Brake-away throttle lock.
