Ride to Eat in South Weymouth, MA
(~125 miles)

The weather had been kind in SE Mass the last few weeks, with a couple drenching rainy days eliminating all traces of the one big snowfall, except the odd ghost of huge plow piles in parking lots here and there. A random “suggested” post on my Facebook feed popped up for a place I’d not heard of called Uncle Charlie’s Finer Diner in South Weymouth, and I began to get hungry…
Seeing clear weather for the week and a warm-up to high 40s on Saturday, I contacted my local riding buddies to drum up interest for an RTE. Nobody was available but my wife agreed to go, so I figured we’d at least get out for a ride and some breakfast for ourselves, even if nobody else showed. I posted up the RTE event on the NER Facebook page and hoped to attract some folks to get out on the roads. They kept me waiting until Friday, but finally the “Going” count shot up to seven.
Saturday morning was overcast as I rolled out the bike, but warmed into the 40s pretty early on.
Char was eager to try out her new First Gear heated jacket liner (xmas gift), though it wasn’t really cold enough to need full blast. I quickly hooked up an extra pigtail to the bike battery for her to use and we headed out to the highways for the initial ride to the diner. The roads were pretty clear of sand and just faint traces of liquid salt in some places after the recent rains. Felt good to be out riding again – every January day on two wheels is a bonus.

Bob, Cheryl, Jeff, Erin, Char – rally heads!
We arrived at the diner about 10 minutes early to find our friends, two rally-riding couples, already kicking tires out back. It was great to see them all again after the long holiday/weather break. We said Happy New Year and immediately all began talking about upcoming rides and trips planned for 2017.
Here’s a group shot in front of the restaurant. (Note the head of the waitress inside the foyer…she ended up photo-bombing us two more times during our visit, what a riot!)
The staff welcomed us at the door like family and were already putting together a few tables to accommodate a group of eight, since as we were expecting another rider or two. The “Cash Only” sign on the door caused a few of us to hang back outside the diner to get cash from what turned out to be the slowest ATM on the planet. Another fellow NER, Bruce (riding a red Ducati) joined us as we sat down.
We settled in to our coffee, jabbering away, all thrilled to be out riding in January and talking motorcycles with our fellow nutjobs. We saw two Goldwings pull in and before we could say anything the staff asked us if we’d need more seats. Yes, please! They asked two other patrons to shift down to a different table so they could pull one more table onto the end of ours. What service! The menu was one of those where you just want to hand it back and say “yes, please”, but then I’m a breakfast food lover. There were several “benedict”-style dishes and the server convinced me to go with the Steak Benedict. Jeff chose the delicious looking Pot Roast n Eggs, now on my short list for the next visit. The staff continued to be very attentive and friendly, keeping our mugs warm with fresh coffee and that one gal kept jumping into the pics, infecting us with her cheeriness and cracking me up:

She was a great sport and agreed to get a table photo of us, even stepping up onto a chair for an aerial shot:

I’d highly recommend this place for an RTE or pre-ride breakfast any day.
We offered to lead a short ride down the south shore coastline after breakfast, and all but one of our group agreed to follow. With temperatures now up around 51, we headed northeast out through Hingham to Jerusalem Road to follow a popular NER route southbound. It’s a fairly slow route that winds amongst local traffic along the coastal roads and neighborhoods, but scenic.

The first views of the ocean and blue skies above.

Our first stop was at Scituate Light for a couple photos. Sea air, waves crashing, and a pretty lighthouse made for a nice stop…but bathrooms were closed and we’d all had coffee with breakfast so we didn’t stay too long.

We squeezed into a parking spot across from a Dunkin in downtown Scituate for a bathroom break and coffee. Our friends from the north took their leave at this point, needing to be back home by late afternoon. We three remaining bikes continued skirting the coast south through Marshfield, scooting out and back over Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury, and ending our group ride by Rte 3 in Kingston.
We said our goodbyes at the Mobil station and then slabbed it home on 44 and I-495, a fun January gathering and ride under our belts (along with the steak and eggs).
